Navratri costumes: Traditional is the norm this time

From chunky oxidised jewellery to mirror work ghagras and cholis, traditional is the norm this navratri. With a week to go stores have started selling the customary wear while dandiya regulars have strated scouting for outfits that blend with the festival.
Some handicraft stores retail the whole package, clothes, jewellery and footwear. Even though the festival is for a mere nine days, revellers don't mind splurging to dress for the occasion.
"Many customers opt for the mirror work and embroidered clothes, these are the most popular.While chania-cholis are the favourite, the younger women prefer long flared skirts with matching kurtis and dupattas," said Vilas Samant, a retail store owner.
The stores in Sector 17 in Vashi as well as in Nerul and Kopar Khairane have a large collection for the customer. "Traditional mojris are a great buy. The ones for women are embroidered while the ones for men are plain. Apart from the oxidised jewellery, the lac bangles and neck pieces are giod buys," said Shakil Ahmed, another store owner.
While a few stores might offer contempory styles, the buyers are few and far between. The street markets offer cheaper options, although the quality is not top notch. "The sets are a good buy, money-wise, feels seller Santosh Kunte. However he added that the set options which include matching footwear. "It saves the customer the bother of having to mix and match, he added.
